The story of the foundation of Rome has many variations. One
of the most commonly believed of the time starts with the Kingdom of Alba. It
is said that when the King of Alba, on the Balkan Peninsula, died, his oldest
son, the rightful heir to the throne, was disposed by his younger brother. The
oldest brother had a daughter that became a priestess of Vesta, and swore to celibacy.
Soon though, she became pregnant with Mars being the father, She gave birth to
two sons, Romulus and Remus, the rightful heirs to the throne of Alba.
Seeing this issue, the twins’ granduncle, the King of Alba, sent someone to kill the two boys. They were set near the Tiber River to be swept away by the floods. They were soon found by a she-wolf who nursed them and a woodpecker who fed them. As they grew up they became heroes of the countryside.
Soon the twins reviled their true identities and seized the throne for themselves. After this they gave the throne to their grandfather and moved to establish cities of their own. Soon after they decided to establish separate cities and eventually Romulus murdered Remus in a fit of rage. He buried his brother and established the city of Rome around his grave.
