The Midas Touch
The story of King Midas is well known, but most people don’t know all of the details. King Midas was the king of Phrygia, a kingdom in the Middle East. He was one of the wealthiest men in the world, with everything he could ask for. His kingdom was peaceful, he had a loving family, and his subjects adored him. Even with all of this, he still wanted more. He would count his gold coins all day long and lust for wealth.
During Midas’ reign, the god of celebration, Bacchus, passed through his kingdom. One of Bacchus’ companions got lost along the way. Midas found him wandering the vineyards days later and welcomed him into his castle. Midas fed him and soon accompanied him back to Bacchus. Being the god of celebration, Bacchus threw a party to thank Midas and granted him one wish. Midas, with his lust for gold, wished that everything he touched turned to gold. Bacchus warned Midas of the repercussions but Midas wouldn't hear them.
The next day Midas woke up and wanted to test his power. He touched several things and they all turned to gold. He then decided to eat a breakfast, but when he went to put a grape in his mouth it turned to gold. His daughter then entered and when Midas hugged her she turned into a golden statue.
Devastated by this, Midas pled to Bacchus to reverse the curse. The god, hating to see such misery and despair, told Midas that if he went to the river and changed his worldviews, that the curse would be lifted. He did this and went back to the castle to find that his daughter was alive and well and when hugged remained a human.
